History

Atılay Submarine (Ay-class)

A member of the Ay-class, the Atılay submarine was constructed at Germaniawerft in Kiel. Launched in 1938 and commissioned on May 19, 1939, the vessel’s specifications include a length of 80 meters, a beam of approximately 6.6 meters, and diesel-electric propulsion. On July 14, 1942, the submarine submerged from Morto Bay as part of a mission to test and calibrate magnetic loop security lines in the Dardanelles. It is estimated that the submarine was lost after striking a mine left over from World War I. Academic studies indicate that the submarine settled "on its keel" at a seabed depth of 65–70 meters. The current and depth conditions at the site have historically complicated salvage and investigation efforts.

The Atılay is a platform designated by Türkiye as the Ay-class, derived from the German Type IX design. The shipyard delivery and fate of the vessel are consistently documented in both official and secondary literature. For diving safety, it must be noted that the wreck is not suitable for recreational diving due to depth, strong currents, and the risk of explosive remnants.

Diving Equipment Information

In addition to standard scuba equipment, nitrox and technical diving gear are required. A dry suit must be worn.
