History

HMAS AE2 Submarine (E-class, Australia)

The HMAS AE2 was launched by Vickers Armstrong (Barrow-in-Furness) in 1913 and commissioned in 1914. During World War I, on April 25, 1915, the AE2 became the first submarine to successfully breach the Dardanelles and reach the Sea of Marmara.

Typical specifications of the E-class include a length of 55 meters, a beam of 6.9 meters, and a crew of approximately 34. On April 30, 1915, following an engagement with the Turkish torpedo boat Sultanhisar, mechanical issues arose, and the crew was forced to abandon the vessel. The submarine was scuttled under the orders of Commander Henry Stoker.

The wreck site of the AE2 was confirmed in 1998 by a joint Turkish-Australian team. Detailed scientific measurements indicate that the vessel lies at a depth of approximately 72–73 meters below the halocline in the Sea of Marmara, resting on a silt ridge and covered in dense anaerobic concretion. Profiles of currents, dissolved oxygen, and salinity explain the corrosive dynamics of the deep-water conditions. Consequently, in situ cathodic protection and monitoring are the preferred conservation methods.
