SuvlaHistory:
The wreck lies at a depth of 13 meters north of Suvla Bay. During the Gallipoli Campaign, on October 30, 1915, the ship was damaged after colliding with a tugboat, drifted, and ran aground. During salvage operations, it broke apart and became unusable. Salvage work was carried out only at night, and to prevent the ship from being recognized as disabled, it was painted to blend in with the surrounding rocky formations. In this way, it was believed that the Turkish side would not be able to target the destroyer. Of the vessel’s total length of 82 meters, 45 meters lie above the sand, while the remaining section is buried beneath it. The four Yarrow-type boilers that remain above the sand are in good condition and, together with the rich fish life and marine biodiversity inside them, form an important photographic attraction for divers.
