History

Massena History:

Built between 1894 and 1898, the ship was named after Andrea Massena, one of the most prominent marshals of the French Revolution. Due to design flaws and excessive weight, the ship was known to be unable to conduct accurate gunfire. The final mission of the vessel was to ensure that ships could safely approach the shore during the evacuation of Çanakkale by the Allied forces. For this purpose, on November 9, 1915, it was deliberately grounded as a breakwater. Today, the Massena lies at a depth of 5–7 meters and, although it has lost its superstructure, it still retains its overall form.

Saghalien History:

Built in 1879, Saghalien is a French passenger ship of the Senegal class. Prior to the Gallipoli Campaign, it passed through the Dardanelles in August 1914 on a mission to evacuate French citizens from İstanbul. The ship’s final mission took place on December 10, 1915, when it was deliberately grounded at Ertuğrul Bay as a breakwater, together with the Massena, to ensure the safe evacuation of British and French soldiers. The wreck lies at a depth of 5–7 meters and has lost its superstructure, but still retains its overall form.
