History

SMS Breslau (Midilli)

The SMS Breslau was among the Magdeburg-class light cruisers of the Imperial German Navy. Commissioned in 1912, the vessel was transferred to the Ottoman Navy in August 1914 under the name "Midilli". Characteristics of this class included a maximum speed of ~27.5 knots and 10.5 cm guns, with the ship’s total length reaching 138.7 meters.

On January 20, 1918, during the Battle of Imbros, the ship sank after striking five mines while operating alongside the Yavuz Sultan Selim (Goeben) out of the Dardanelles. The wreck, which is one of the most significant points for shipwreck diving in the region, was discovered in 1993 by Selçuk Kolay. It is reported that the Breslau lies at a depth of approximately 76 meters on a sandy seabed in a relatively upright position.
