The SS Carthage was a passenger-cargo ship of approximately 5,600 GRT, built in 1910 by Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson (Newcastle). With a total length of 403 ft (~123 m), the vessel was armed and used for transport missions while in service with the French Navy during the war.
On July 4, 1915, the ship was torpedoed and sunk by the submarine U-21, approximately 2 nautical miles off the coast of Seddülbahir. Today, the wreck lies at a depth of approximately 60–85 meters according to various sources, placing it within the limits of technical shipwreck diving.
